Muottas Muragl to Alp Languard

The walk from Muottas Muragl to Alp Languard must count as one of THE walks in the Engadine. It starts from the top of the funicular railway from Punt Muragl and in good weather is likely to be very busy.

Leaving Muottas Muragl the path drops down into Val Muragl with Piz Muragl on the right...

.....past the farm and restaurant at Alp Muragl.

There's quite a drop down into the valley...

....passing this wedge shaped avalanche protection wall above a barn.

Down at the stream there's a bridge and the junction of the path up to the Segantini Hut.

The path to Alp Languard starts to climb the south west side of the valley at first on a broad gentle path.

Looking back along the path to Muottas Muragl.

That broad path soon turns into something a little rougher..

....before reaching the end of the spur leading down from Piz Muragl.

Here the path wraps itself round the mountain. In the distance is St Moritz and its lake.

The high mountains and glaciers now come into view at the head of Val Roseg, with Piz Roseg at the end of the valley.

The path winds around the mountain....

....and soon Pontresina can be seen below.

Another look back to St Moritz with Piz Nair above the town and Piz Julier just hidden by cloud.

The path now enters a more wooded section where there's a mountain restaurant just off the path at Unter Scharfberg. Everything for this is brought in either in rucksacks (fresh food) or by helicopter (drinks). Sadly there is only instant coffee!

Beyond Unter Scharfberg the path first climbs and then drops down to a stream....

...where the Swiss path builders have clearly been in action.

The first sight of Alp Languard comes at this point.

However, the path builders have excelled themselves by building a curved corrugate iron tunnel over which flows a torrent and rockfall track.

The path now climbs steadily up towards Alp Languard.

Another look back downhill towards the outskirts of Pontresina and, in the distance, Celerina.

As Alp Languard is reached the peaks around Diavolezza and the Bernina range become more obvious.

At Alp Languard a path leads towards Piz Languard (just covered by cloud) while on the right is Piz Albris.

From Alp Languard a steep path leads back down to the valley, but we took the easy way down on the very exciting chair lift, which changes direction suddenly in the middle of the journey down.
